Samuel Hall 47 Years a Slave Scholarship

Freedom Presbyterian Church, in concert with the descendants of Samuel Hall, a former slave, and the descendants of Hugh Roddy Hall, Samuel's owner, has established a scholarship in honor of Samuel Hall. Samuel Hall lived in Iredell County, NC from 1818 until 1855 on the Hall Plantation. Samuel’s half-brother, Ceasar Hall, was a founding member-Charter Elder- of Freedom Presbyterian Church organized in 1864. Samuel’s wife, Minerva, was likely an early member of Freedom Presbyterian Church as well. She is buried in the Freedom cemetery.

After leaving North Carolina, Samuel Hall wrote his autobiography, "Samuel Hall: 47 Years a Slave.” Through this book, the descendants of Hugh Hall and Samuel Hall were able to connect.

Freedom Presbyterian Church, together with the descendants of Hugh and Samuel Hall, decided to create a scholarship to honor this formerly enslaved man. This scholarship is to assist descendants of Samuel Hall, African American students, and others who want to further their education. The long-term goal is to equip scholarship recipients with the life enhancing knowledge and skills that will increase their potential of developing generational wealth for themselves and their descendants.
